Borderlands 4 Skill Tree Unlock Requirements (Verified In-Game): Trees Are Independent, 15 in Common Opens Branches, Capstones Cost No Points
Most guides and planners tell you which skills are good — but not how many points a node actually costs (where you can and can’t reach it). Everything below was verified in-game, not copied from other sites.
The rules (identical for every Vault Hunter)
Each Vault Hunter has 3 color trees (red / blue / green). Color trees are independent — points spent in one color tree do NOT count toward another.
Inside each color tree the layout is two-layer: a Common section → 15 points in Common opens 3 sub-branches → each sub-branch ends in a Capstone. Each layer is tiered top-to-bottom — T1 → T2 → T3 (“T” = Tier). Points required (counted within that color tree):
| Section | Unlocks | Points required (within that color tree) |
|---|---|---|
| Common | T2 | 5 in Common |
| Common | T3 | 10 in Common |
| Common | opens 3 sub-branches | 15 in Common |
| Sub-branch | T2 | 5 inside that one sub-branch |
| Sub-branch | T3 (capstone tier) | 10 inside that one sub-branch |
Key points:
- You cannot sum across color trees (red points don’t help unlock blue).
- You must put 15 into the Common section first to open the sub-branches.
- A sub-branch’s T2/T3 count only the points inside that one sub-branch. You cannot add up points spent in different sub-branches.
Spreading points thin opens nothing. After the Common 15, putting 5 points into each of the three sub-branches spends 15 more points and still leaves every branch stuck around its own T2 gate. Build vertically down one branch instead (5 into T1 → T2 → 5 more → T3).
Note: this section originally said the three sub-branches were counted together. In-game testing on 2026-07-24 showed that is wrong, and the article has been corrected. See the revision note at the end.
Capstones and augment slots don’t cost skill points
There’s no such thing as a “paid” capstone or augment slot. You only ever spend points on passive skills — capstones and augment slots don’t consume points at all.
- Capstones cost no points: once you reach a sub-branch’s T3 (capstone tier), you equip the capstone without spending a point on it (there’s no point cost to put into a capstone).
- Your default augment slot (1) costs no points either — you have it from the start.
- You only spend points to add slots in a few cases:
- C4SH’s Devil’s Tines is a passive skill: spend 1 point → +1 augment slot (one per color tree, up to +3, so 4 augments with the default). C4SH has no capstones — this is how it expands slots.
- Vex’s Dark Pact is a capstone (no point cost) that also grants +1 slot (run 2 augments).
- Default loadout is 1 Augment + 1 Capstone (tied to that tree’s action skill).
- So your 59 points basically all go into passives — the only exception is a slot-adding passive like Devil’s Tines (1 pt each).
Worked example: reaching Vex’s Unsealed
Unsealed is the capstone at the end of a sub-branch in Here Comes Trouble (the red color tree). Inside this color tree only:
- Put 15 points into the Common section → the 3 sub-branches open
- Put 10 points into that same sub-branch (e.g., Shocking Attunement 5 + Grave Current 5) → you reach the capstone tier (T3)
- Equip Unsealed without spending a point (capstones have no point cost)
= 15 (Common) + 10 inside that sub-branch = 25 points, all inside Here Comes Trouble, and Unsealed itself is 0 points. Points in other color trees don’t count.
C4SH: 4 augment slots
C4SH has no capstones. Instead, each color tree has a Devil’s Tines passive: spend 1 point → +1 augment slot (up to +3 across three trees, so 4 augments with the default). Devil’s Tines is the only place C4SH spends points to gain slots — capstones and the default augment slot cost no points.
Some nodes stay locked even when you meet the point requirement
Everything above is decided purely by how many points sit in a section. But in-game testing turned up nodes that carry a second, separate condition: they will not unlock until you have put at least 1 point into one specific earlier node, even when the tier requirement is already satisfied.
Three cases are confirmed in-game so far.
| Node | Character / position | Extra requirement | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inspirado | Rafa / Remote Agent B2 T3 | 1 point in Concentrated Build Up (same branch) | 2026-08-05 |
| Cold Welding | Harlowe / Creative Bursts B1 T3 | 1 point in Carry the One (same branch) | 2026-08-07 |
| Enriched | Harlowe / Creative Bursts Common T3 | 1 point in Elementary (Common) | 2026-08-07 |
All three share a shape: a T3 node names a specific T1 or T2 node in the same section. Because it reproduces across two different Vault Hunters, treat it as a mechanic rather than a one-off.
The reverse is also worth recording: some branches have no prerequisites at all. Harlowe’s Creative Bursts B2 has none, so Common 15 + 10 in that branch = 25 points (level 26) reaches the Demon Core capstone with nothing extra required (confirmed 2026-08-08).
So a point allocation that adds up correctly on paper can still fail to unlock in game. We have not mapped which nodes carry prerequisites.
Only two Vault Hunters change their slots (full audit)
The default is 1 Augment + 1 Capstone. Only Vex and C4SH change it:
| Vault Hunter | Slots |
|---|---|
| C4SH | No capstones. Devil’s Tines passive (1 pt) in each tree → up to 4 Augments |
| Vex | Dark Pact (a capstone, no point cost) grants +1 augment → 2 Augments |
| Amon / Harlowe / Rafa | Locked to 1 + 1 (their capstones only transform the action skill or add damage) |
Gear does not add slots. Class mods and enhancements do not grant extra augment or capstone slots. Slot changes come only from the skill tree.
Class mod bonus skill points do NOT count toward tier unlocks. A class mod’s “+X to [skill]” boosts (and can overcap) individual skills, but only the points you actually spent count toward the Common-15 / single-sub-branch-10 thresholds. Bonus points can’t open the next tier — and they can’t hand you a slot, so gear can’t shortcut a slot-adding passive like Devil’s Tines.
Summary
- Unlocks are counted per color tree — points in other color trees don’t count.
- Each color tree is two-layer: Common (15 opens the sub-branches) + sub-branches (10 inside one branch reaches the capstone tier).
- A sub-branch’s T2/T3 count only that branch’s own points. Spread them across three branches and none of them open.
- Capstones and the default augment slot cost no skill points (you don’t spend a point on them once you reach the tier).
- The only points spent to add slots are passives like Devil’s Tines (1 pt → +1).
- Example: Vex’s Unsealed = 15 (Common) + 10 inside that branch = 25 points in that tree; the capstone itself costs no points.
- Some nodes need a specific earlier node on top of the tier cost (3 confirmed cases across Rafa and Harlowe).
All numbers verified in-game (as of 2026-07). Values may change with patches.
FAQ
How many points do you need to reach a capstone in Borderlands 4?
25 points inside that one color tree: 15 in the Common section (which opens the sub-branches) plus 10 inside that one sub-branch. You cannot add up points from different sub-branches. The capstone itself costs no points, and points in other color trees do not count.
Do capstones cost skill points?
No. Once you reach the capstone tier you equip the capstone without spending a point on it. Only passive skills cost points.
Can you combine points from different skill trees to unlock tiers?
No. Each color tree (red, blue, green) is independent. Only points spent inside a given tree count toward that tree's unlocks.
Does C4SH have capstones?
No. C4SH has no capstones. Instead each color tree has the Devil's Tines passive: spend 1 point for +1 augment slot, up to 4 augments across all three trees.
Do class mods or gear add augment or capstone slots?
No. Class mods and enhancements do not add slots, and class mod bonus skill points do not count toward tier unlocks (only points you actually spent do). Slot changes come only from the skill tree, via Vex's Dark Pact or C4SH's Devil's Tines.
